Green Lipped Mussels For Pets: What Are The Benefits?

Green Lipped Mussels are one of New Zealand’s unique underwater treasures. We Kiwis love them, not only because they’re delicious, but because of their many health benefits: mussels were touted as New Zealand’s first superfood. At Feline Natural we thought it was only fair to share the love with our four-legged customers, so we’ve included the seafood sensation in our Feasts.

But first, why are mussels such a health hit?

Three cheers for Omega-3

New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels are bursting at the shells with Omega-3 fatty acids, which are proven to alleviate inflammatory conditions like joint pains, heart disease, and diabetes.

We know every parent of a fur baby thinks theirs is the cutest in the world. Well, here’s more good news for you: omega-3 is also known to help improve skin condition and keep coats shiny, so your pup or cat is always ready for their close-up. Click!

A joint effort

New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels pack in lots of glucosamine and chondroitin (what we like to call the GCs), which keep our pet’s joints in tip-top condition. The GCs are naturally present in cartilage and ligaments, but they begin to break down with age, causing arthritis and limiting mobility.

The research stacks up too. Studies have shown that feeding New Zealand Green Lipped to arthritic dogs significantly improved their joint pain and swelling, as compared to a group of dogs without green mussels in their bowls.

Pantry staples for your pet

New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels are also a key ingredient in our Complete & Balanced Feast Range due to the range of benefits they offer our pets. Whether it's a hearty meal for a energetic kitten, regular meal for an adult cat, or a gentle offering for a seasoned elder, our Feast Range ensure that every cat, no matter their size or age, receives the best in natural nutrition, with green lipped mussels playing a vital role in improving their health and wellbeing.

There’s a lot to be said for a mouthful of mussel – and once it’s finished, your cat will be begging for more!
